skiScandinavia: Family Skiing in Sweden

Our guide for a successful family skiing holiday, whatever your family's age.

Swedish ski resorts as a rule are very family friendly. The Scandinavian’s love spending time outdoors, and in winter that often requires some kind of modified footwear, whether that’s skis, cross-country skis, snoeshoes, a snowboard, or even a husky sled. This love of the outdoors is started young, and wherever you go for your skiing holiday in Sweden, you’ll see tiny totts on skis shortly after they can stand, or pulled along in special sleds behind their cross-country skiing parents.

Even so, different resorts are better for different families, depending on your ages, abilities, or what else you fancy doing while you’re here. Of course, you can always contact skiSweden for a tailor-made suggestion, but here is our rough guide on where to head for different families.

Skiing holidays for young families

Taking your young family on holiday can be a bit daunting, but if you’re heading to Sweden you can rest assured that your whole family will have a blast. Most importantly you can be certain that your young budding skiers will be raring to come back again next year. At skiSweden we find that the foundations for a young family ski holiday are: location, ski schools, and something to do off the slopes (because little legs get tired quickly).

Salen Lindvallen has all of these key factors and more, and is one of our favourites for young families and first-time skiers...

skiScandinavia: New Age Range for Lift Pass & Ski Hire Prices in Sweden & Norway

Skiing holidays might be far from your thoughts right now, but the teams at skiScandinavia have been busy getting ready for the coming ski season and they've got some great news for families travelling next winter.

Lift pass and equipment hire prices have just been released for winter 2017-18, and along with the updates they've changed the age range for adult and youth prices in some of Norway and Sweden's most popular resorts.

Great savings for families skiing in Norway and Sweden

Adult prices now start at 18 years, and youths are classified as between 7 - 17 years old. Which means an extra 2 years of discounts for families choosing to travel to TrysilHemsedalÅreSälen and Vemdalen. Children age 6 years and under still get a free lift pass as long as they're wearing a helmet. Just to clarify, that's:

Adults: 18 years and up
Youth: 7 - 17 years
Child: 6 years and under

With great savings to be had by booking early, and a real chance of some resorts being sold out by the end of summer, there's no reason not to book your next skiing adventure now.

APRÈS SKI FOR EVERYONE

APRÈS SKI FOR EVERYONE

Après ski is one of the iconic aspects of skiing holidays and these days it isn’t just about Jager and dancing on the tables. There is a resort and après ski atmosphere to suite everyone, whether you want to sing along to live music after a day on the slopes, want something to entertain the children or just want to soak well worked muscles in a hot tub.

Traditional Après Ski

Friday and Saturday are when you’ll find the bars bustling with friendly Swedes who are enjoying a well-earned drink or two (or more) after a day on the slopes. Most resorts have a couple of lively choices but we suggest the Fjällgården Hotel for a great balance of vibrant après ski atmosphere in the afternoon and a relaxed feel in the evenings, alongside great skiing.

Family Après Ski

A lot of Swedish ski resorts are geared towards families and a lot will offer a weekly programme of family activities to keep the kids entertained after a day on the slopes. Live music and shows, BBQ’s in the snow and visits from resort mascots are just a few things that are on offer. Our favourite family friendly après ski resorts are Sälen Lindvallen and Idrefjall – voted Sweden’s best family ski resort in 2014.

Relaxing Après Ski

If you don’t fancy a party every night then don’t worry, our handpicked hotels offer a great selection of relaxing alternatives. We can suggest hotels with luxury spas, such as the Copperhill Mountain Lodge, where you can unwind and soak away a day on the slopes in a beautiful setting. Or alternatively you could retreat to a cosy hotel bar and read in front of an open fire. If you prefer a cabin then we can suggest somewhere with a private sauna and log burning stove for the ultimate cosy night in.
